I've read in Slavery and the Making of America (by Horton & Horton) that starting with the Revolutionary War, black men proved their prowess in battle -- only to have to repeat that proof all over again in the next war, up to the Civil War. Says to me that prejudice can be stronger than fact! Thank you for this post -- I never knew about the Battle of Island Mound.
